Just when you think the battle of small is beautiful has been decided another petite beauty jumps into the race. Computex Taipei beginning on June 3rd is set for the launch of Eee 901 and its closest rival MSI Wind. I previously speculated that Asus Eee 901 had the best in show in its pocket. Now, MSI has leaked specs and pictures of the MSI Wind and the gauntlet has been thrown down. It is going to be stiff competition between Wind and 901.

What to Expect:

MSI handed off a few Wind models to local Taipei reviewers. The MSI Wind has a 10-inch brilliant display compared to the Asus Eee 901 8.9-inch display. The built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam in the Wind has the advantage of a specific software included

The much ado discussion has come to rest. The Wind will have Atom Diamondville. If the guesses about CPU are correct, both new machines will use the Diamondville. This is because Intel the manufacturer has decided not to continue producing the mini Celeron processor and will launch Atom in June.

The unique feature for Wind is the ability to overclock the CPU by 20-percent by using a dedicated key. Possibly an orange key where F10 used to be. Moreover, Wind utilizes the MSI Turbo drive, TurboBook GX600 Both will have a 1.6 GHz processor speed, but Wind may edge out the competition if all system are go.

The MSI Wind will have an 80 GB hard drive and 1 GB RAM on board and a 2 GB expansion slot. Compared to reports about Eee 901, Wind may have the inside edge on the inner workings. Wind has 802.11b/g wireless, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, LED backlighting like the Mac Air, 3-USB ports, 1-RJ45 Ethernet port, 1-VGA out port, Mic Out port, and audio-out jack. The extras are mind boggling if the forum reports are accurate.

Add in a really user friendly keyboard which is significantly bigger than Eee 901 and the race is turning into a nail biter. Then there is the overall appearance of the Wind versus the Eee. The pristine colors of Eee. Compared to Wind's black, pink and red with a hint MSI may add artistic designs. On this point, we will have to wait until the unfolding on June 3rd.

Another big deal is the MSI Wind decision to equip it with a 3-cell and 6-cell battery. The 3-cell has about 2.75-hours and the 6-cell battery is estimated in the vicinity of 6-hours plus. The problem is according to some bloggers and insiders, MSI has sent a message out to buyers that there is a problem with shipment on the 6-cell battery and the 3-cell will be used until the supplier acquires the 6-cell battery.

MSI will have a Shelton 08 platform. There will be two models. One with XP that will have interesting software that will cost in the range of $549. The other Linux model will cost in the $399 price range. The Eee 901 is supposed to price out in the $650 range.

The rumors, leaks and early-bird reviewers have given Computex Taipei 2008 a fabulous sense of excitement. The race is on and may the most exciting petite mobile PC win.
