The sophisticated smartpen, Pulse has been released by Oakland, California based Livescribe a privately held company. The Pulse smartpen is a computer which appears to be a beautiful charcoal blue with a silver band and black accents writing pen. It has dual microphones, an OLED display for short messages, a 3D recording headset, embedded speakers, an audio jack, and a USB charging cradle.

In the box you will find a tablet of proprietary Dot Paper. The Dot Paper enables the Pulse smartpen to record audio as the user takes notes or performs verbal calculations. All you need to do is tap the pen point on a word you have written and it will give you the audio text verbatim up to five seconds before you wrote the word and will even define or translate the word.

The Pulse and Dot Paper is the tool and the proprietary Livescribe platform and desktop software are the life force of the smartpen. It comes with various downloads likened to the iTunes store. It has a translator, Calc, dictionary and other applications that can be downloaded from the Livescribe web site. In addition, users are encouraged to develop various applications and share them with the Livescribe Community. The community of users show off their work product from art work to teaching Chinese writing symbols. It is an extremely active community.

It can write and it does come with replacement black ink cartridges and a stylus cartridge. The Pulse smart pen along with Livescribe proprietary Dot Paper allows students, academics and innovators to switch the tables on who is directing the creative process. Pulse and Dot Paper puts pen and paper where it should be in the hands of the innovator and a means to an end.

According to Jim Marggraff, the CEO of Livescribe, tools today direct peoples's thinking. Namely, spreadsheet a word processing document. People should direct the tools. We have made a smartpen and Dot Paper which allows people to think and solve problems in a natural way. The pen is a computer in your hand. It has microphones. If you write the word ineffable and then tap the word, the Pulse will orally define the word and speak it.

The Livescribe Paper-Based Computing Platform OS utilizes Anoto Technology and Java Development Environment. The Pulse is available in 1GB for $149.95 and 2 GB for $199. It comes with the 3-D headphones, a tablet of Dot Paper and USB dock for uploading and recharging. The battery is rechargeable, but not replaceable. It is expected to last three to five years with normal charging. The battery life between charges is approximately 10 hours.

Jim Maggraff, a graduate of MIT and former executive with LeapFrog Enterprises and inventor of the LeapFrog FLY Pentop computer is no stranger to learning and achieving the maximum creative use of man-made tools. It is from this background that the Livescribe Team of hardware engineers, software specialists and creative educators came together to develop the Pulse and Dot Paper platform.
