Research in Motion has a new kid on the block. The BlackBerry 8220 Pearl Flip Smartphone addresses consumer demand for a convenient fold-up smartphone that can be tucked away in a pocket.

The new 8220 Pearl measures a mere 3.98-inches long, 1.97-inches wide with a depth of0.69-inches. It weighs only 3.6-ounces. The 8220 sports a brilliant 128 x 160 pixel color, transmissive TFT LCD external display with a clock, caller ID and date. The internal display is 240 x 320 pixel color, transmissive TFT LCD internal display. The internal display is ideal for browsing the Net, playing games or watching videos. The 8220 is sleek and black with the familiarity of previous models and new designer features.

RIM's 8220 Pearl Flip operates on the North American frequencies 850/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS. Additionally, it has WiFi 802.11b/g and EDGE built in. For international users the 8220 operates on world-wide frequencies. RIM included Bluetooth 2.0 and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The 8220 Pearl Flip like other smartphones in the 8000 series operates on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The 8220 Pearl Flip has a RIM wireless modem built in. Perhaps it was an oversight or viewed as surplus, the 8220 does not have EV-DO support and it lacks tethered modem capability. RIM included a slightly larger 128 MB internal memory capability and an micro-SD card slot for expanded memory. The standby time is 14-days and RIM claims a 4-hour talk time.

The internal technology relies on the tried and true proprietary applications BlackBerry is known for in the business world. The BlackBerry 8220 Pearl Flip has access to spreadsheets, wordprocessing, web browsing and downloading capabilities. The only difference between the 8220 Pearl is the flip-phone design. The QWERTY keyboard of the 8220 is exactly like the other 8000-series Blackberry smartphones. It offers SureType, backlighting on the keyboard and the Trackball navigation feature. The BlackBerry 8220 Pearl is a more stylish and convenient design for those who like flip-phones.

The BlackBerry 8220 Pearl Flip includes the same entertainment features as the other 8000 series models. It features a very nice camera/camcorder, media player and better than average speaker phones with a built-in microphone. The 8220 Pearl Flip allows business users to access their corporate data. BlackBerry Maps are also included. The 8220 Pearl Flip does not include a built-in GPS feature.

The only drawback with the BlackBerry 8220 Pearl Flip is that it does not support 3GPP RTSP mobile streaming web sites. If consumers are looking for this feature in particular the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 or 8130 has this feature. However, it's good to keep in mind only the BlackBerry 8220 and the 8120 are the only models with WiFi 802.11b/g for accessing HotSpots and mobile networks.

The BlackBerry 8220 Pearl Flip will be released soon in North America.
